Mrs Loraine Nolan has been named the 2026 Moree Plains Shire Senior Citizen of the Year.
Nolan received the award at the Seniors Week luncheon held at the Moree Services Club.
Mayor Susannah Pearse said Seniors Week provided an opportunity to recognise the important contribution older residents make to communities across the shire.
“Seniors Week is a wonderful opportunity to honour our senior citizens, who are valued members of our communities and often the backbone of many of our local organisations,” Pearse said.
“No one understands the importance of community more than our seniors, who have seen the shire through both good and challenging times and understand the value of local people supporting one another.
“Council also congratulates the very high calibre of nominees this year and thanks them all for their service to our shire. Each nominee has made a significant and positive contribution to our community.”
This year’s nominees included Rhonda Gallagher, Margi Kirkby, Frank Crump, Margaret Young, Ron Clissold, Doris Davis, Wendy Long, Jeff Greenaway, Meryl Dillon, Julie Johnson, Loraine Nolan and Marlene Howard.
Pearse said Nolan was a highly valued and active member of the Mungindi community.
“Mrs Nolan is known for creating a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone around her. Each week she volunteers countless hours to ensure residents remain connected, supported and able to access the services they need,” she said.
Nolan volunteers at the Mungindi Library every Monday, where she shelves books, greets visitors and helps travellers discover local attractions.
On Tuesdays she runs the weekly Mungindi Bingo, organising prizes, coordinating the event and sharing morning tea with participants.
Every second week, Nolan organises and drives the community bus to larger towns, giving residents without transport the opportunity to shop, socialise and enjoy a day out. She also coordinates regular trips to Goondiwindi for movies and to Pally for market days and community visits.
Her involvement extends across a number of local organisations, including the Mungindi Progress Association, Mungindi Hospital Auxiliary and Mungindi Show Auxiliary. A talented crafter, Mrs Nolan also exhibits her work at the Mungindi Show and encourages others to get involved.
Nolan also volunteers her time to drive residents to medical appointments in Toowoomba, ensuring distance does not prevent access to essential healthcare.
“Mungindi is a stronger, kinder and more connected community because of Mrs Nolan and the selfless way she supports those around her,” Pearse said.
The Moree Plains Shire Senior Citizen of the Year award is presented annually as part of the NSW Seniors Festival, which celebrates the valuable contributions seniors make to communities across the state.
