Community gathers for NSW Seniors Festival with food, music and good company

The community gathered at Guyra Bowling Club this week to celebrate the NSW Seniors Festival with food, music and good company.

“It was lovely to catch up with some of our region’s wonderful seniors over a delicious lunch,” Armidale Regional Council Deputy Mayor Todd Redwood said.

“I appreciated the food, the live music, and especially loved the chance to chat with so many great people from our community.”

Guyra Home Support Services hosted the Golden Years Gathering, a lunchtime event on Tuesday, 10 March, thanks to a $4,500 grant from the NSW Seniors Festival Grant Program 2026.

Council received the grant to host a special activity for older community members in Guyra, aiming to foster social connection, community spirit and joy for local seniors.

Guests enjoyed a free two-course hot meal prepared by the Guyra Bowling Club and were entertained by versatile and talented local musician Ian Russell.

“Congratulations to the small but powerful Guyra Home Support Services team for being so warm and welcoming, and for creating this event, which perfectly reflected their caring, inclusive and community-driven approach,” Redwood said.

“I believe it achieved their aim of encouraging Guyra’s older community to get out and about this week – to connect over a wonderful lunch while celebrating the NSW Seniors Festival 2026.

“Seniors are the heart and soul of our community. They are mentors, volunteers and keepers of history, and we must remember to keep them in sight.

“Events like the Golden Years Gathering remind us of the importance of inclusion and social connection. It’s about creating opportunities for our older residents to live life in colour and know they are valued and supported.”
