When it comes to health and wellbeing, many of us focus on exercise, sleep, and managing stress—but one of the most powerful influences on our overall wellness often goes overlooked: the gut.
Olivia Nivison, degree-qualified naturopath and founder of New England Naturopathy, is passionate about helping her clients understand the critical connection between gut health and mental wellbeing.
“Mental health starts in the gut,” Olivia says. “Your gut microbiome plays a key role in regulating serotonin and dopamine production, managing stress responses, controlling inflammation, and ensuring your brain gets the nutrients it needs to function at its best.”

Olivia’s approach blends traditional naturopathic principles with contemporary scientific research, specialising in gut health, fatigue, women’s health, and mental wellbeing. Her work is particularly focused on supporting individuals whose gut microbiome may be out of balance—a state that can contribute to anxiety, low mood, brain fog, poor concentration, sleep disturbances, sugar cravings, emotional eating, and even worsening PMS-related symptoms.
“Supporting your gut isn’t just about taking probiotics,” Olivia explains.
“It’s about lifestyle choices that nourish your microbiome and calm the nervous system.”
She recommends practical strategies that anyone can integrate into daily life, including:
- Eating a variety of plant fibres—aiming for diversity rather than perfection. Different fibres feed different beneficial bacteria, helping your microbiome flourish.
- Incorporating fermented foods, if tolerated, to boost your gut’s friendly bacteria.
- Practicing vagus nerve and nervous-system regulation techniques, such as mindful breathing or gentle movement, to reduce stress and improve gut function.
- Reducing ultra-processed foods, which can disrupt the balance of gut bacteria and increase inflammation.
These steps, Olivia notes, can have a significant impact on mood, focus, energy levels, and overall wellbeing.
“When your gut is supported, your mental resilience improves, and everyday stressors become easier to manage,” she says.
New England Naturopathy operates in both Walcha and Armidale, and Olivia also consults at En Pointe Health every second Wednesday, providing tailored naturopathic care for individuals seeking long-term gut and mental health support.
Olivia’s tip for better gut health is all about baby steps.
“Small changes in diet, lifestyle, and mindset can make a huge difference to your gut and your mental wellbeing,” she says.
“Even modest improvements in gut health can ripple out to improve mood, concentration, sleep, and energy. It’s the foundation of overall wellness.”
“It’s about creating sustainable habits, not quick fixes.”
Throughout February we’re going to be helping New Englanders look good and feel great.
