Anaiwan woman and renowned artist Aunty Sharon Cutmore will create a stunning earth artwork as a central feature of the Armidale Regional Council’s Australia Day 2026 celebrations at the Dumaresq Dam Recreation Area.
Known for her deep connection to Country, Aunty Sharon uses natural earth and sand materials to weave stories reflecting culture, identity, and the environment. Her upcoming work for the 2026 event offers the community a unique opportunity to witness creativity grounded in tradition and respect for the land.
Aunty Sharon, who works in education and serves as a cultural advisor at a local school, emphasised the importance of family and storytelling in Aboriginal culture.
“When I create earth art, I’m expressing my culture and my connection to the land and the place where I come from,” she said. “The design I’ve created for the day is about connection. It brings together all the towns and communities from across this area – big and small – to show how we are linked and united.”
For Aunty Sharon, the event is a chance to foster unity and understanding. “We want to share our stories, because Australia does have a black history, and we were here first,” she explained. “This is my way of telling my story and creating understanding.”
The location holds personal significance for the artist. “When I was young and growing up in Armidale, we used to come to Dumaresq Dam for family gatherings, so it will be special to return there and make the artwork together,” she said, noting that her mother will also attend.
Armidale Regional Council Mayor Sam Coupland expressed his excitement, noting the artwork will be both visually striking and culturally significant. “Australia Day is about reflecting, respecting, and celebrating,” Mayor Coupland said. “Aunty Sharon’s work embodies these values perfectly.”
The earth art will be featured during the Australia Day Beach Party program, which begins at 12 noon following the 10:30 am Citizenship Ceremony and Awards. Other highlights include a rowing demonstration, guided cultural walk, kids’ games, free ice cream, and a BBQ. A free bus service will operate between town and Dumaresq Dam.
