Drive safe this new year

NSW Farmers is urging people heading into country areas to take extra care on rural roads this new year.

NSW Farmers’ Rural Affairs Committee Chair Glen Andreazza said with many of the state’s roads and bridges in shocking condition after years of damage, it was vital road users exercised caution and drove to the conditions in the regions this year.

“Our local roads alone are waiting on more than three billion in repairs, and the rest of our roads and bridges aren’t looking any better,” Mr Andreazza said.

“There’s huge potholes, loose surfaces and all manner of other damage strewn across our road network, so it’s vital we pay attention and take particular care when we’re travelling.”

As NSW Farmers continued to call for increased investment in road repairs, Mr Andreazza said simple measures could go a long way to ensuring everyone’s safety.

“Conditions may not be what you expect, so keep a safe distance from other vehicles, wait until it’s truly safe to overtake and take breaks when you’re getting tired,” Mr Andreazza said.

“Make sure you also take extra care around trucks, including when overtaking, as their size means they’re not as maneuverable as other vehicles.

“It’s been a horror year on our roads, and we want everyone to get home.”
