Armidale set for a festive week with PLC’s Summer Fair and Carols

Carols in the Cathedral is a magical way to start the Christmas season

As the calendar turns toward December, PLC Armidale is rolling out the red carpet for two heart-warming community-events – the lively Signature Summer Fair and the beloved Carols and Service of Nine Lessons – giving families in Armidale every reason to embrace the festive spirit early.

Summer Fair: Saturday 29 November, 11 am–4 pm

The fun kicks off on Saturday 29 November at the leafy Junior School grounds on Crest Road. The Fair, which is open to all, is a wonderfully nostalgic, family-friendly occasion that doubles as a festive market and community gathering. Expect a colourful mix of stalls run by PLC students and alumnae: lucky dips, cakes and baking, preloved and up-cycled clothes, bric-a-brac, plants, books, and handmade crafts – many of which make perfect early Christmas gifts. And for those seeking holiday charm: handmade decorations, unique jewellery pieces, and local crafts are on offer.

Communications and Marketing Manager for PLC Armidale, Vanessa Arundale, tells us that the biggest drawcard for the day is its old-world charm.

“It’s just a really lovely day – all the stalls are run by our girls and the whole day just has that old-fashioned family fair feel to it – all the good old games like lucky dips and treasure hunts. It’s an opportunity for the whole family to come out and enjoy a picnic and some fun together,” she said.

Kids and families will find plenty to enjoy: face painting, hair-braiding, creative craft activities, chicken and duckling encounters, portrait sessions, and festive games. Live performances by PLC ensembles and choirs will add a merry soundtrack to the day. Meanwhile, food stalls serving everything from Devonshire tea and cakes to pizza, barbecue, Indian and Thai dishes mean no one goes hungry, making it an ideal summer-season picnic.

And if you’re looking for a gift or a treat for yourself, the silent auction, with more than 20 exciting items donated for bidding, offers the perfect opportunity. From fine wine to swimming-lesson packages, there’s something for everyone. Bidding is already open online at galabid.com/plcarmidale

Carols & Service of Nine Lessons: Wednesday 3 December, 6–8 pm

The festive fun continues with a traditional carols evening: the annual Carols in the Cathedral and Service of Nine Lessons, to be held on Wednesday 3 December at Saints Mary & Joseph Catholic Cathedral, Dangar Street, Armidale. Hosted by PLC Armidale, this event offers a peaceful and uplifting way to reflect on the season. The evening begins at 6:00 pm and welcomes all members of the community.

This cherished tradition combines nine short readings – telling the story of hope, faith, and celebration – with Christmas carols sung by choir and congregation alike. It’s a beautiful moment to bring the community together before the holidays, whether you come solo, with friends, or with the family in tow.

“If you haven’t attended Carols in the Cathedral before I cannot recommend it enough,” said Ms Arundale.

“It is a ‘chills up the spine’ type event, it is just so beautiful – an absolutely magical evening for people to come and appreciate the beautiful music in a phenomenal setting.”

Together, these two events offer a heartfelt invitation: come celebrate summer, community and Christmas with PLC Armidale. Whether you’re browsing for prezzies at the fair, enjoying a picnic under the trees, or lifting your voice in song at the cathedral, there’s something for everyone. Bring your friends, your family, and your festive spirit – and kick off the season with joy, connection and community.
