SBM25: Specially good

October is Small Business Month! And to celebrate, we’re highlighting some of the great small businesses we have throughout the region. Register your business here

Today we have three businesses who make special things for good reasons – specialty cakes, organic clothes, and social good.

New England Cake Co.

Your local specialty cakes maker

Armidale, NSW 2350

New England Cake Co. is all about bringing creativity, flavour, and heart to every celebration. Based in Armidale and serving the wider New England region, we create custom cakes, cupcakes, and sugar cookies tailored to suit every occasion. Alongside fully bespoke designs, our growing collection of signature cakes and flavours can be ordered directly through our website, making the process simple and stress-free.

What began as a small home-based project has blossomed into a full-time business built on quality, artistry, and connection. Founder Kattie, a mum of one with a background in community services, turned her passion for baking into a career after moving her family to Armidale. Supported by her husband Alex with markets and deliveries, she now runs New England Cake Co. full time — bringing her portfolio of over 350 designs to life for birthdays, weddings, and everything in between.

You’ll often find New England Cake Co. at markets in Armidale, Tamworth, and Uralla, where the community can enjoy fresh bakes straight from the kitchen. With a dedication to detail, honesty, and making every event memorable, New England Cake Co. is proud to be part of life’s sweetest moments.

The Organic Tshirt

Family-run sustainable fashion made locally in Glen Innes

2/150 Ferguson St. Glen Innes, NSW 2370

The Organic Tshirt is a family-run business based in Glen Innes, NSW, leading the way in ethical, sustainable fashion. Founded by Sandro and Stefania in 2011, the business was created to bring fashion manufacturing back to Australia and challenge the wasteful culture of mass production.

Specialising in small-batch, on-demand clothing, The Organic Tshirt ensures that every item is made with care, reducing waste and promoting responsible consumption. Their approach to slow fashion prioritises quality over quantity, and considers every link in the supply chain — from the people who make the clothes to the environment that sustains us all.

By supporting local manufacturing, The Organic Tshirt helps keep money within Australia while reducing the carbon footprint associated with overseas production. Customers who choose their products are making a conscious decision to support ethical practices and a more sustainable future.

Through their commitment to innovation and education, Sandro and Stefania are helping Australians make better fashion choices, proving that style, sustainability and social responsibility can go hand in hand. The Organic Tshirt stands as a proud example of how small, local businesses can make a big impact on the planet and the fashion industry alike.
