Warialda will soon welcome some very special visitors, both human and furry, when the Australian Koala Foundation (AKF) arrives in town from Tuesday, 28 October to Thursday, 30 October for a three-day visit celebrating conservation, community, and connection.
The Brisbane-based AKF team will meet with Warialda’s Save The Koala Shop staff and host an Open Day at Koala Quarters, inviting locals to learn more about their work and share their passion for protecting one of Australia’s most iconic species.
The Open Day will be held on Wednesday, 29 October, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at 2 Hall Street (formerly known as the Challenge Building). Everyone is welcome to drop in, enjoy snacks and a light lunch, and have a friendly chat with the AKF team about the projects making a difference in the region.
One of the key initiatives to be discussed is the Koala Kiss Project, a nationwide program designed to connect and protect vital Koala habitats — including those across the Gwydir region. By linking habitat corridors, the project aims to safeguard the long-term survival of wild Koala populations while also supporting local biodiversity and land management efforts.
Leading the visiting team is Deborah Tabart OAM, Chair of the Australian Koala Foundation, alongside a diverse group of scientists, specialists, and support staff. The team includes Dr Derek Johnson (Botanist), Mr Mitchell Peake (GIS Specialist), Mr Cesar Alvarado (Finance Manager), Mr Ian Harling (Manager of the AKF Research Station), and scientists Ms Deisy Velandia and Ms Camila Cevallos. Also joining the group is Mr Christopher Kwan, Manager of Retail and Online Shops, and the organisation’s newest — and furriest — recruit, Cilla the golden retriever, who is in training to work alongside AKF’s much-loved dog ambassador, Elvis.
As part of the visit, the Save The Koala Shop on Stephen Street will hold a one-day-only special sale on Wednesday ,29 October, offering 20% off storewide. The shop is renowned for its range of high-quality, sustainable gifts, and this event offers the perfect opportunity to pick up unique Christmas presents while supporting Koala conservation. Featured collections include Nathan Ferlazzo’s stunning wildlife artwork, La La Land’s vibrant designs, and Banksia Glen’s bright, beachy gift range.
The AKF encourages everyone, from local landholders to wildlife enthusiasts, to join in, ask questions, and discover how individual actions can contribute to broader conservation goals.
The Australian Koala Foundation is Australia’s leading non-profit organisation dedicated to the effective management and conservation of Koalas and their habitat. Among its proudest achievements is the completion of the Koala Habitat Atlas, mapping the entire geographic range of the species. The AKF continues to advocate for stronger legislative protection through its proposed Koala Protection Act.
