A recent walking football charity event held in Inverell as part of the Mini World Cup has proven a winner both on and off the field, raising much-needed funds for a local organisation making a real difference in the community.
The event, which brought together teams from across the region in a friendly atmosphere, culminated in victory for the team known as the Globetrotters. The winners were given the opportunity to choose a local charity to receive the proceeds from the event – a donation of just over $1,000.
The Globetrotters selected River Faith Groceries, a food pantry based in Oliver Street, Inverell, which operates three days per week. The organisation provides free and low-cost groceries and personal hygiene items to individuals and families doing it tough.
Rhonda Mason, a board member of River Faith Groceries, said the team’s generosity had come at a critical time.
“We’re seeing more and more people who are forced to make heartbreaking decisions—whether to put food on the table or pay the electricity bill,” Mrs Mason said.
“There’s an alarming number of people in our community living on just one meal a day. This donation will help us continue supporting those who need it most.”
River Faith Groceries runs on a lean budget and relies heavily on community support to meet the increasing demand for their services.
Organisers of the walking football event, Heinrich Haussler thanked all the teams who contributed to its success and said they hope to make the event an annual tradition.
“It’s been fantastic to see the community come together through sport for a good cause,” Mr Haussler said. “We’re proud not only of the funds raised, but also of the awareness we’ve been able to bring to an organisation doing such vital work.”
Community members who wish to contribute can make monetary donations directly to River Faith Groceries, helping to ensure continued support for local families in need.
Those facing food insecurity are encouraged to visit the organisation to access cheap affordable food – no registration or referral is required. River Faith Groceries is located at 15 Oliver Street, Inverell, and is open Wednesday to Friday, 10am – 3pm.
