Glen Innes invests in safe, reliable and future-ready water services

Glen Innes Severn Council is reassuring the community that local water supplies remain safe, secure and of high quality, while also investing in modern systems to keep services reliable for years to come.

Both Beardy Weir and Deepwater Weir are currently at full capacity, with recent testing confirming no traces of blue-green algae. In addition, testing for per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) across all raw water supply points returned results well within national guidelines.

“These results confirm what our community expects – that our drinking water is safe, reliable and of a high standard.” said Mayor Margot Davis.

“At the same time, Council is investing in modern upgrades that will give us even better oversight and ensure we are prepared for the future,” she said.

A major step forward will be the introduction of a new monitoring and control system at the Glen Innes Water Treatment Plant in 2025. The Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) upgrade will act as the “eyes and ears” of the plant, providing real-time data on water quality and system performance.

For the first time, Council staff will be able to monitor and respond to changing conditions remotely, enabling quicker responses, fewer disruptions and even greater reliability for households and businesses. The upgrade is scheduled to be completed within 10 months of commencement.

Council recognises that a secure and plentiful water supply is not only essential for residents but also a critical factor in attracting new investment and supporting local industry. Businesses considering Glen Innes can be confident that the region has the water resources and infrastructure to meet both current needs and future demand.

“Water security is one of our region’s greatest strengths,” Cr Davis said. “Whether it’s supporting local industry or encouraging new businesses to invest here, having a safe and reliable water supply is a real competitive advantage for Glen Innes.”

“Council is proud of the high-quality water services we deliver, but we don’t take them for granted. By modernising our systems today, we are ensuring safe, reliable and future-ready water for our community tomorrow,” she said.

Council continues to replace ageing water mains each year to reduce leaks, maintain water quality and prevent service interruptions. Preparations are underway for significant upgrades along Bourke Street, between Macquarie Street and West Avenue in Glen Innes.
