It’s been a long wait, but Ashford’s water supply has officially introduced fluoride as of May, 2025.
Inverell Shire Council said this milestone marks the culmination of a process that began with a Council resolution in 2007 and included the construction of a new water treatment plant and extensive regulatory and community consultation.
Following final approval from NSW Health in February 2024, Council undertook a public information campaign to keep Ashford residents informed.
In December 2024, Council announced the planned introduction of fluoride in early 2025, and a community letter drop in April 2025 provided notification of the expected dosing week, including an information flyer from NSW Health.
The original fluoridation starts date of the week commencing 5 May 2025 was delayed due to the unavailability of the specialist contractor, however, Council was able to reschedule and successfully implement fluoridation on 21 May 2025.
Council will continue to monitor and manage the fluoridation system in accordance with NSW Health guidelines.
Water fluoridation is considered a safe and effective public health strategy to improve oral health.
