The University of New England has appointment Professor Peter J. Anderson to the role of UNE’s Pro Vice-Chancellor (Indigenous).

Professor Anderson is a distinguished academic and leader from the Walpiri and Murinpatha nations, bringing a wealth of experience and commitment to Indigenous education and research.

Professor Anderson joins UNE from Griffith University, where he has been serving as Professor and Director of the Indigenous Research Unit.

As UNE’s PVC-I, Professor Anderson will champion UNE’s commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff, students, and communities. He will lead the implementation and evolution of key strategies related to Indigenous employment, education, and research.

These strategies seek, among other things, to increase Indigenous employment to 4 per cent of University staff, increase Indigenous students’ participation and success in University study, embed Indigenous knowledges in curriculum and foster research that responds to the aspirations and needs of Indigenous communities.

Professor Anderson will also play a pivotal role in strengthening ties between UNE and local Indigenous communities, formalising a Council of Elders to guide the University’s path forward.

Throughout his career, Professor Anderson has demonstrated a deep commitment to advancing Indigenous knowledges in higher education, ensuring that Indigenous perspectives are significantly and meaningfully integrated into curricula and pedagogy.

He has a proven track record of developing successful Indigenous education and research programs while strengthening partnerships with Indigenous communities.

Professor Anderson’s previous leadership roles include founding Executive Director of the Carumba Institute at QUT and Director of the National Indigenous Research and Knowledges Network (NIRAKN). He is an elected Fellow of the Queensland Academy of Arts and Sciences, a member of the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies, a Lifelong Fellow of the Atlantic Institute-Rhodes Trust at Oxford University, a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and the former Vice President of Research for the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Higher Education Consortium (NATSIHEC). He is also a member of the Australian Research Council College of Experts.

Professor Anderson holds a PhD in Education from Monash University and has secured over $4 million in competitive research grants.

“Please join us in welcoming Professor Anderson as a member of UNE’s executive leadership team. He will be based in Armidale and will commence in the role in late June.” said UNE.
