The University of New England has unveiled two commemorative benches to celebrate the rich legacy of Dr Harrold Fosbery Consett Davis, after whom the Consett Davis sporting fields are named, and Associate Professor Gwenda Davis.
The installation provides a space for reflection and honours two foundational figures in UNEโs history, whose contributions helped to shape the Universityโs academic and community life.
Consett and Gwendaโs daughter, Ms Margaret Chambers, explained that the idea for the memorial originated in a discussion between her cousin, Mr Peter Cowman, and Dr Jim Scott, retired Professor of Farming Systems at UNE and keen Park Run participant, where it became clear that few people are aware of Consett Davisโ identity or legacy.
โWhile I am delighted that my fatherโs memory is to be revived, I am more concerned that a forgotten part of the history of UNE will be understood, particularly by users of the sporting fields,โ Ms Chambers said.
โHe was one of the original lecturers in biology at UNE, a man of wide interests and achievements in both academic and sporting spheres.
โWe decided that my mother Gwendaโs contribution to teaching and research in biology, in her case mainly in botany, over many years should also be remembered. Having a background in history myself I would like to encourage awareness of UNEโs history.โ
The Consett David Memorial playing fields were established in 1950 after a local fund-raising campaign launched in 1947. Since then the fields have been used for a large variety of activities including football competitions, athletics, park runs, and events.
An accomplished academic in both zoology and botany, Consett Davis was one of UNEโs first lecturers and tragically lost his life in a plane crash during World War II in New Guinea while on assignment with the Australian Armyโs Tropical Scientific Service. Following his death, Gwenda Davis continued her husbandโs work in botany at UNE, making significant strides in plant taxonomy and contributing to the development of the universityโs natural landscape.
Chief Executive Officer of UNE Life Mr David Schmude highlighted the importance of the sporting fields to local communities, saying the Consett Davis playing fields have been at the heart of Sport UNE for many years.
โThese fields provide a vital space for students, staff, and the broader community to come together, stay active, and build lasting connections,โ Mr Schmude said.
โThe fields embody the spirit of teamwork, resilience, and inclusivity that SportUNE champions, creating opportunities for all to engage, compete, and thrive. Their significance extends beyond sport, fostering a vibrant and welcoming environment that has been integral to the campus experience.”
The memorial project was made possible thanks to a generous donation from the Consett Davis family and with the support of UNE, particularly Estate and Built Environment, and UNE Life.
