Bendemeer Community Event – Discover the Macdonald River
May 10 @ 9:30 am - 12:30 pm

Join us for a special community event to learn about the history, ecology, and biodiversity of the Macdonald River. Local historians Anne & Winston Doak will share stories of the river’s past, while ecologists Dr. Lou Streeting and Martin Dillon will discuss the vital role the river plays in supporting wildlife, including efforts to protect endangered freshwater turtles.
Dr Lou Streeting is a zoologist and conservationist dedicated to protecting Australia’s endangered freshwater turtles. Her work focuses on the western saw-shelled turtle (Myuchelys bellii), evaluating conservation strategies such as nest protection, artificial incubation, and hatchling release to reinforce wild populations. Lou’s research began with the discovery of the first recorded live M. bellii nest, and she has since protected or released more than 6,000 hatchlings into the wild. Beyond research, Lou is passionate about education and outreach, using science communication to inspire the next generation of conservationists. Lou is the author and illustrator of Where Are All the Baby Turtles?, a children’s book introducing young readers to the challenges faced by freshwater turtles. Through storytelling, art, and hands-on conservation, Lou connects people with science and encourages action to protect threatened species.
Martin Dillon is an ecologist based in Armidale, NSW, dedicated to protecting threatened wildlife through practical conservation actions. As the coordinator of the Turtles Forever project, he leads efforts to conserve the endangered Western saw-shelled turtle (Bell’s turtle), a freshwater species found only in the Northern Tablelands. For over a decade, Martin has collaborated with landholders and researchers along the entire length of the Macdonald River to safeguard nesting sites, release hatchlings, and monitor population trends. He is a Senior Land Services Officer with Northern Tablelands Local Land Services.
This event is a great opportunity to connect with your local landscape, hear from experts, and learn how we can help preserve the river for future generations.
Tea, coffee and light refreshments provided.
