Man charged after alleged high-speed police pursuit through Tamworth

Double demerit points will apply for the holiday season

A man has been charged after an alleged high-speed police pursuit through several Tamworth streets last night.

Police say officers attached to Oxley Police District attempted to stop a Nissan utility on Grant Street in South Tamworth about 7.35pm on Thursday for roadside testing.

When the driver allegedly failed to stop, a pursuit was initiated.

The vehicle was allegedly driven through Central Avenue and David Street before continuing onto the Oxley Highway, Duri Road and Burgmanns Lane, where police allege it reached speeds of more than 120 km/h in a signposted 60 km/h zone.

The pursuit was later terminated for safety reasons.

Police later arrested a 23-year-old man at Tamworth Police Station about 8.30pm, where he underwent a drug test that allegedly returned a positive result for cocaine.

He was charged with failing to comply with a direction to stop, police pursuit and dangerous driving offences, and exceeding the speed limit by more than 45 km/h.

The man was granted conditional bail to appear before Tamworth Local Court on April 13.
