90-year future secured for Tenterfield Aerodrome

The future of the Tenterfield Aerodrome has been secured for generations, with Tenterfield Shire Council extending the lease to the Friends of Tenterfield Aerodrome (FOTA) through to 2113.

The unanimous council decision in December locks in community stewardship of the aerodrome for the next 90 years, reinforcing its role as an important local asset for aviation, events, and regional connection.

The agreement was recently formalised at council chambers, where FOTA committee members Rob Evans and Barry Bicknell signed the lease extension alongside council representatives.

Council acknowledged the significant contribution of the volunteer group in maintaining and developing the aerodrome for the benefit of the district.

“Congratulations again to FOTA and thank you for the incredible work you do to keep our aerodrome well maintained and thriving for Tenterfield,” Council said.

FOTA said the long-term lease reflects a strong partnership with Council and a shared commitment to the community.

“The lease now runs for 90 years, to 2113. This is a serious commitment to our community by both FOTA and the Tenterfield Shire Council,” the organisation said.

“It is a demonstration of what can be achieved when people connect with a purpose. Thank you to everyone involved in this journey so far … and we look forward to the next 87 years!” said FOTR.

The aerodrome continues to be a hub for community activity, with preparations already underway for FOTA’s Fabulous Fire-Fly Fete on Saturday, 9 May.

The family-friendly event will feature market stalls, raffles, classic cars, aircraft displays, and food from local community groups, offering residents a chance to celebrate the aerodrome and the volunteers who keep it running.
