Telstra to upgrade 4G and 5G services in Taminda

Telstra will upgrade the mobile base station servicing Taminda this week, promising faster speeds and improved performance for local customers.

The telecommunications provider says the works will boost the site’s capacity, delivering quicker downloads, smoother streaming and less network congestion. The upgrade will also prepare the site for a future expansion of 5G services.

Mobile services in the area will be temporarily disrupted while the work is carried out.

Telstra Regional General Manager Mike Marom said growing data demand was driving the need for network improvements.

“We know how important mobile connectivity is for Australians, whether you’re in the city or the country,” he said.

“As data use over our mobile network continues to grow, adding extra 4G capacity to our mobile site in the area will help deliver faster downloads, smoother streaming and less congestion for customers. The work will also make the site ready for a further upgrade to our even faster 5G in the future.”

Mr Marom acknowledged there would be short-term inconvenience for customers.

“While disruption is required while the upgrade is underway, we’ll only be switching off the site when we need to and will have it back online and working better than ever as quickly as possible,” he said.

When services will be affected

The base station will be switched off from Monday, 9 March to Friday, 13 March.

Telstra customers will receive text messages advising them of the scheduled works.

Landline services, nbn internet services and mobile coverage from other providers will not be affected.

Any calls to Triple Zero made from a Telstra mobile while the site is offline will automatically connect to another available mobile network for access to emergency services.

How to stay connected

During the outage, Telstra customers can continue to make calls and send text messages by switching on Wi-Fi Calling, a free feature available on most smartphones that enables calls over a Wi-Fi connection.

Business owners are encouraged to speak with their bank about connecting EFTPOS terminals to their nbn or Wi-Fi connection to avoid delays in processing transactions.
