The BreastScreen NSW mobile screening van is currently in Glen Innes, bringing free breast cancer screening to local women as part of its ongoing tour across the New England.
The van is currently located in the public car park behind Glen Innes Town Hall in Sommerlad Lane until Wednesday 25 February.
BreastScreen NSW provides free mammograms for women aged 50 to 74, who are invited to screen every two years. Aboriginal women are encouraged to begin screening from age 40. Women with a family history of breast cancer should speak with their GP about their specific needs, and anyone experiencing breast symptoms should seek medical advice without delay.
Appointments take less than 20 minutes, no doctor’s referral is required, and the mobile clinic is equipped with a lift system to support women with mobility issues or disability.
Rebecca Delaporte, Manager of BreastScreen NSW Hunter New England, said regular screening remains one of the most important steps women can take for their health.
“Detecting breast cancer early increases your chance of survival while reducing the likelihood of invasive treatment, such as mastectomy or chemotherapy,” Ms Delaporte said.
“Around 90 per cent of women diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history. This is why breast cancer screening is so important for all eligible women.”
In a region where specialist services often require long travel and out-of-pocket expense, the BreastScreen NSW van remains one of the few affordable and reliable preventive health services New England women can count on.
“Bringing these vital services to Glen Innes means more local women can be screened. Life gets busy and we want women to make their health a priority,” Ms Delaporte said.
After it’s current visit to Glen Innes, the van will continue its way south, visiting:
- Tingha – 26 to 27 February
- Bundarra – 2 to 3 March
- Guyra – 4 to 11 March
- Armidale – 12 March to 20 May
Following its extended stay in Armidale, the van will continue south to Uralla and Walcha, before travelling later in the year to Gunnedah, Narrabri, Moree and Inverell.
Women can book online or call 13 20 50 to make an appointment.
