Barraba and Nundle Australia Day honours announced

Australia Day Award ceremonies in Barraba and Nundle have recognised exceptional contributors to the community on Monday, 26 January 2026. Tamworth Region Mayor Russell Webb sent his congratulations to the winners across the region and thanked them for their contributions. “It’s an honour to be able to recognise these amazing people who are making such a huge contribution to our community and also to welcome the new residents into our community with open arms,” he said.

The 2026 Barraba and Nundle Australia Day Award recipients were:

Barraba Citizen of the Year – Arlene Weekes Arlene Weekes was recognised for her outstanding local leadership and commitment, particularly regarding the transformation of Queen Street over the last 12 months. She led a public art program inviting residents to decorate pot-planters and hosted mosaic tiling workshops at her home to teach participants necessary techniques. She managed every stage of the project and collaborated with Council to coordinate planter placement, resulting in a display that symbolises the community’s spirit.

Barraba Community Event of the Year – Barraba Golf Club The club was recognised for the Mens Sand Green Championships, which attracted visitors and over 100 competitors from across NSW, Queensland and Victoria. The town benefitted from the influx of players who stayed in town for the weekend, patronising local shops, hospitality venues and other clubs.

Nundle Community Recognition Award – Ed Clynick Ed Clynick received an award for his contributions spanning over 20 years. He volunteers at the Nundle Golf Club, maintaining the course mostly on his own. Additionally, he assists at the bowling club and has served on its board for many years.

Nundle Community Recognition Award – Gail Clynick Recognised for her 20-year contribution to the community, Gail has served on the board of the Nundle Sport and Recreation Club and volunteers across various roles in Nundle. In addition to helping at the golf club, Gail volunteers one day a week at the Old Church Boutique and is noted for her welcoming nature to visitors.

Nundle Community Recognition Award – Marge Turner and Maureen Hulm Both Marge Turner and Maureen Hulm were recognised for their contributions to Nundle over many years across various community groups, specifically their work over the past decade at the Nundle Craft Shop. In the past seven years, they have pitched in with regular volunteer shifts, maintaining the shop to a high standard.

In attendance at the Barraba awards were Australia Day Ambassador Susanne Gervay and Tamworth Region Councillor Brendon North, while Tamworth Region Councillor Charles Impey attended the Nundle awards.
