NEGS adds open morning to sporting excellence weekend

The New England Girls’ School has added campus tours to a weekend focused on sporting excellence, announcing an Open Morning and Sports Trials day to be held on Friday, February 13.

The Open Morning and Sports Trials will run from 10am to 3pm, offering prospective families the chance to tour the historic campus while talented young athletes trial for elite sporting programs in hockey, netball and rugby.

Ella Kenny, NEGS Head of Sport, said the showcase day reflected the school’s broader educational philosophy.

“At NEGS, we believe excellence isn’t always dramatic. Sometimes it’s the consistent effort, the attention to detail, the integrity when no one’s watching,” Ms Kenny said.

“This showcase day demonstrates what makes NEGS unique—our commitment to developing the whole child, whether they’re discovering a passion for equestrian pursuits, excelling on the hockey field, or finding their voice in the classroom.”

The Open Morning, running from 10am to 12pm, will include guided tours of the school’s 50 hectare campus, combining heritage listed buildings with modern facilities.

Families will be shown the co-educational Junior School for pre-kindergarten to Year 6 students, the Senior School for Years 7 to 12, advanced science laboratories, technology rich classrooms, and boarding facilities.

The tours will also highlight the school’s nationally recognised Equestrian Centre, which offers programs for students from beginner level through to advanced riders, with purpose built stables, arenas and professional coaching.

Championship standard sporting facilities will also be on display, including a synthetic hockey field built to International Hockey Federation standards, netball courts and dedicated rugby fields.

Sports Trials will follow from 1pm to 3pm for athletes aged 10 to 18, providing an opportunity to trial for places in the school’s Athlete Development Program.

The combined event will take place the day before the school’s High Performance Camp, making the trip to Armidale more worthwhile for New England families who need to travel to Armidale.

The trials follow a highly successful 2025 sporting season for NEGS, with the under 12 hockey squad winning their first ever gold medal and the senior hockey team finishing runners up in the IGSA competition.

Netball teams claimed back to back premierships in both IGSA and local competitions, while rugby pathways have been developed in partnership with NSW Rugby Union.

As the first regional school to partner with Hockey NSW for its Player Pathway Program, NEGS offers specialist coaching from former Olympians and state level athletes. Limited sporting scholarships are available for successful student athletes.

NEGS Principal Liz van Genderen said the school’s focus was on helping students become the best version of themselves.

“Being your best isn’t just about being the best,” Ms van Genderen said.

“It’s about becoming the fullest version of yourself—capable, confident, and ready for whatever comes next. Whether a student improves steadily in mathematics, shows up consistently for their teammates, or demonstrates grace under pressure, they’re living our values.”
