Tamworth football refs get wired with funding boost

Tamworth Football Referees Association will receive a $2,000 boost after being named the latest winner of the Greater Bank’s New England Community Funding Program.

The association trains, develops and supports football referees of all ages across Tamworth. These referees officiate football safely and according to the laws of the game across all levels in the region.

Part of the funding will be used to purchase new electronic headsets which will enable better communication between referees during games. The remaining money will go towards sending local referees to attend training and development camps in Newcastle.

Tamworth Football Referees Association President Matthew Hall said the funding will make a significant impact on the organisation.

“Refereeing is about more than making sure players follow the laws of the game; it’s a great way for people of all ages to keep active and build leadership and teamwork skills while giving back to the game we all love,” Mr Hall said.

“We are extremely grateful to Greater Bank for this funding that will help us to sustain an important service in our local football community.”

Greater Bank Regional Manager Scott McCluskey said the customer-owned bank was proud to support the initiative through the Community Funding Program.

“Tamworth Football Referees Association have built a supportive and inclusive environment for referees of all ages and abilities,” Mr McCluskey said.

“We are delighted to support this association and the amazing work they do across the local community.”

Greater Bank’s New England Community Funding Program has provided over $500,000 to local community groups and organisations since its establishment in 2016.

Voting is now open for the October round of the program, with another $3,000 up for grabs. The current finalists are North Tamworth Junior Bears Football Club, Gunnedah and District Australian Football Club and Armidale Athletics.

Votes can be cast daily until 5.00pm Wednesday 29 October at
