Fiesta La Peel to return with a celebration of culture, dance and flavour

Tamworth’s biggest celebration of multiculturalism is set to light up Bicentennial Park once again, with Fiesta La Peel returning for its twelfth year on Saturday, 18 October.

The much-loved annual event has become a highlight on the region’s cultural calendar, bringing together locals and visitors from across New South Wales to celebrate the diversity that shapes the New England.

From 4pm to 8.30pm, Bicentennial Park will be transformed into a vibrant hub of colour, sound, and taste. More than 100 nationalities will be represented at this year’s event – Laotian, Thai, Chinese, Hungarian, Persian, Indian, Polish, Filipino, Italian, German, Spanish, North and South American, and many more.

Tamworth Multicultural Inc President Eddie Whitlam said the festival remains true to its founding purpose of bringing the community together.

“As an inclusive celebration, Fiesta La Peel continues to bring people together to taste food, enjoy music, and celebrate the many cultures that make up our multicultural community,” Mr Whitlam said.

Food, music and performances from around the world

The event will feature a full afternoon and evening of cultural performances, live music and dance, along with artistic demonstrations showcasing traditions from around the globe. Festivalgoers can also browse a wide range of food and art stalls, each offering a taste of different cultures and crafts.

Crystal Vero, Events Officer at Tamworth Regional Council, said the event’s success relies on strong community involvement.

“We’re looking forward to hosting this event for another year in partnership with Multicultural Tamworth Inc, who are a key driver in helping us celebrate multiculturalism throughout the region,” Ms Vero said.

Organisers are also encouraging community groups and organisations to list their own multicultural events on the Fiesta La Peel website if they are happening around the same time.

Latin rhythms kick off the celebrations

One of the highlights leading into the main event will be the Fiesta La Peel Latin Party, held at the Tamworth Service Club on Friday, 17 October. The evening promises a night of sizzling rhythms, dance and connection, starting with a three-hour dance workshop featuring Cuban, salsa, bachata, and merengue styles. Beginners are welcome, with performances and social dancing running late into the night.

Tickets are $50 for early bird bookings or $60 at the door, with the event proudly presented by Latin Dance in the Country Towns. Bookings can be made by contacting Johan Quezada on +61 413 941 547.

Also coinciding with this year’s multicultural celebration is the release of Eddie Whitlam’s documentary “Uncle Eddie”. Made by Happy Panda Productions, “Uncle Eddie” details Eddie’s 45-year endeavour to support migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers in Tamworth. From helping Laotian families in the 1970s to advocating for Sudanese refugees in 2006, Eddie has played a central role in shaping Tamworth into a multicultural city. The documentary will be available to watch at Forum 6 Cinemas on 26 October and 2 November at 3pm.
