Narrabri Shire Council is working closely with the NSW Environment Protection Authority to pursue those responsible for an illegal dumping of asbestos-contaminated waste at the Boggabri Transfer Station last week.
Clean-up notices will be issued to the offenders. In the meantime, the Boggabri Transfer Station will remain closed until the asbestos is cleared.
“Council would like to thank the Boggabri community for their ongoing patience while we continue to address this illegal asbestos dumping and issue clean-up notices to those responsible,” General Manager Eloise Chaplain said.
“Unfortunately, while we had initially hoped to be able to open the transfer station facility on Friday, we are unable to open as scheduled while we pursue the people responsible for the illegal dumping.”
“We understand the frustrations of the Boggabri community due to this ongoing closure; however, the safety of our staff and community is paramount.”
Mayor Darrell Tiemens said he was extremely disappointed by the incident.
“People who dump asbestos without care show no regard for the community or the people who have to clean up their mess,” Mayor Tiemens said.
“This illegal dumping has inconvenienced the Boggabri community as well as put staff and contractors at risk.”
“I would like to thank Boggabri residents for their patience while we deal with this matter.”
Narrabri Council will continue to provide updates to the community regarding the Boggabri Transfer Station, including possible reopening of the facility, as they become available.
