Tamworth Regional Conservatorium of Music is hosting its fourth Orch Fusion event at Tamworth Memorial Town Hall on Thursday, September 18, from 9am to 3pm – followed by a public concert that evening.

This year’s event will be the first that is open to musicians in secondary schools. Noelene Bosworth, director of Tamworth Regional Conservatorium of Music (the Con), said this shift will expand the size of the orchestra and allow the exploration of a wider variety of orchestral scores.

“Orch Fusion is a day of orchestral music-making for school-aged musicians and is open to students from across the region,” said Bosworth, who is calling for more students to register their interest in participating through Humanitix or by contacting the Con office.

“The Orch Fusion event is a great opportunity for student musicians to develop teamwork, musicianship, and confidence in a supportive and dynamic environment.”

“Past events have seen students attend from Narrabri, Quirindi, Manilla, Barraba, and Tamworth schools.”

Catering to players of all levels, participants will spend the day learning and rehearsing several pieces under the guidance of Con teachers, and this year a visiting tutor from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, as part of a buddy program.

Bosworth said the day will start with sessions and tutorials for ‘tutti’ (everyone), during which students will go into their sections of strings, woodwind, brass or percussion to rehearse. The students will also take part in musical games.

According to Bosworth, students that have attended the previous Orch Fusion days are keen to come back again this year.

“The year six students from last year are especially excited that the event is now open to high school ages. We have past senior students that have attended as mentors in previous years also keen to come back to assist this year.”

The day ends with a concert held in the Tamworth Memorial Town Hall at 6pm. The concert will feature items from the Orch Fusion orchestra, Quirindi High School (which last year dazzled the audience with a solo performance of ‘Rakes of Mellow’), and the Tamworth Con Community Orchestra. The concert is open to the general public.

Tickets to the concert can be found through the Conservatorium’s website, through Humanitix or can be bought at the door.
