Eulah Creek is where it’s all happening on the first weekend in August, for the Cast Iron Chef and Vintage Machinery Events.
On Saturday August 2, budding chefs will make sure the competition is hot in the kitchen to try their hand at the winning camp oven recipe.
Beulah Creek Hall Committee President Dave Morris said there are a few categories for keen cooks to take part in, from 8am until 9.30pm.
“Categories include open and junior Cast Iron Chef, Cast Iron Dessert Chef and open and junior Billy Boiling Champ,” Mr Morris said.
“The event will feature novelty games and finish with a Farmers Challenge including dinner.”
“We usually get about 20 contestants, all preparing meals in their camp ovens.”
“A lot of the guys who are into machinery have camp ovens and they make everything from roast pork to stews and tasty curries. Some also do gluten free meals.”
Mr Morris said the age of contestants ranges from 10-year-olds through to those in their 80s.
Judges this year include the local Police Inspector, the Mayor and a young woman who has become a bit of a celebrity after being on the TV show Farmer Wants a Wife.
Festivities continue Sunday, August 3, with the Vintage Machinery Day.
“Step back in time with working horse demonstrations, vintage machinery and cars, street rods, blacksmithing and historical displays,” Mr Morris said.
“We’ve got everything from old petrol and diesel engines from the late 1900s plus old engines, and many antique collectibles.”
“The Narrabri Vintage Car Club members bring all their cars and trucks out and a lot of tractors of all ages, right back to about the 30s and 40s.”
“Many people come along who didn’t grow up on farms and are interested in what goes on.”
There’s also plenty to see for motorbike enthusiasts.
It’s expected there will be a display of more than 30 motorcycles, from trail to old racing bikes, road, adventure and vintage bikes.
Horses will also be a major attraction with local horsewoman Kate Clancy working with a couple of her top performers.
“Kate used to work in a circus and now trains horses. Together they will show some amazing tricks and the kids love it,” Mr Morris said.
“One of our local shearers will demonstrate sheep shearing and kids – big and little, can have a go.”
The Rural Fire Service will have a large display, including a large fire truck and plenty of interactive displays for the kids.
Mr Morris said the RFS plays an important role in teaching the public about how best to protect their home in fire season and the value of clearing gutters and what to do in a bush fire.
“There will be kids’ activities such as games, face painting and entertainment from 9am until about 3pm, as well as plenty of refreshments with Devonshire Tea stands, coffee carts, art and craft stalls and a barbecue lunch.”
The Cast Iron Chef Day and the Vintage Machinery attraction will both be held at Beulah Creek Hall, just 15 minutes from Narrabri.
Mr Morris said the weekend’s events are a great opportunity for locals and visitors to immerse themselves in rich agricultural history and enjoy good food.
“Whether you’re a history buff, machinery enthusiast, or love a great day out with family and friends, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.”
Entry is $5 per adult (cash only at the gate) and kids are free, with all money raised to go back into the local community.
