Lots of greyhounds seeking new families to love in Tamworth this weekend

Tamworth will be a hub of wagging tails and hopeful hearts this Saturday as Greyhounds As Pets (GAP) hosts a large Greyhound Adoption Day at Petstock Tamworth.

The free family-friendly event will run from 10am to 2pm on 26 July at 101 Lockheed Street, Taminda, and offers locals the chance to meet and adopt one of many greyhounds in need of a loving home.

Visitors will be able to interact with a wide selection of dogs, talk to GAP staff about the adoption process, and even take home their new best friend on the same day. Special adoption rates will be available at the event, with standard fees reduced to $150 (normally $250), and senior dogs aged seven and over available for just $75 (normally $150).

“Adoption days are truly special, more often than not, it feels like the dogs choose their families! We’re thrilled to have so many gorgeous dogs joining us this Saturday,” said Samantha Fairless, Greyhounds As Pets New England Regional Coordinator.

“Keep an eye out for Neon—she’s full of love and absolutely adores belly scratches.

“If you have a cat at home, our beautiful greyhounds Clara and Tina would love to meet you.

“And for those seeking a more laid-back companion, Alvie might just be your perfect match,” Samantha said.

GAP says greyhounds make ideal companions for households of all shapes and sizes. They are known for their calm and gentle demeanour, affectionate nature, and minimal grooming needs. Unlike many other breeds, greyhounds rarely bark, don’t have a strong odour, and shed very little.

They are also suitable for homes with other pets and are known to get along well with both small children and other animals. Their low-energy lifestyle—interrupted only by bursts of play or a daily walk—makes them ideal for busy families or older adults seeking companionship.

To help prospective adopters prepare, GAP is offering a ‘Dogalogue’—a list of greyhounds attending the event, with photos and personality descriptions. Those interested can register via the GAP website to receive it ahead of time.

Greyhounds As Pets is a not-for-profit initiative coordinated by Greyhound Racing NSW to help retired racing dogs transition to pet life. All greyhounds available for adoption through GAP have been assessed for temperament and behaviour, and desexed, vaccinated and microchipped prior to adoption.

With lots of dogs ready to meet their forever families, this Saturday’s event offers the perfect opportunity to find a gentle new companion and give a retired greyhound a new leash on life.
