Where to park in Tamworth: What you need to know as paid parking resumes

Motorists in Tamworth are reminded that paid parking has resumed in parts of the CBD, following the installation of new ticketless and cashless meters.

While the system has changed, the key message remains the same: check the signage and know your options.

Where can you park – for free

All council-owned off-street car parks in Tamworth are now free for all-day parking. These include:

  • Community Centre Car Park
  • Hands of Fame Car Park
  • White Street Car Park
  • Ray Walsh House Upper and Lower Car Parks

Additionally, the Town Hall Car Park (off Fitzroy Street) and the Regional Playground Car Park remain free but are subject to a 3-hour time limit.

Motorcyclists can take advantage of 10 free all-day motorcycle parking spaces located within the Town Hall Car Park.

Paid parking zones

In the CBD, paid parking is now enforced in on-street areas, with updated meters that support cashless and ticketless transactions.

  • Peel Street: Paid parking applies Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 6:00pm. Time limits remain in place on weekends, but payment is not required on Saturdays or Sundays.
  • Other CBD Areas: Paid parking rules and hours vary outside Peel Street. Drivers are urged to check signage carefully before leaving their vehicle.

Parking is priced at $1.20 per hour, with flexible payment options:

  • Pay in 15-minute blocks at the meter
  • Or pay by the minute using the EasyPark mobile app

Time limits and enforcement

Regardless of whether a zone is paid or unpaid, signposted time limits must be adhered to. Vehicles must be moved once the maximum time has expired.

Parking Rangers continue to monitor the network. While technology now assists with enforcement, officers will still inspect vehicles identified as potentially overstaying or not paying before issuing fines.

Revenue from parking infringements is reinvested into the upkeep and improvement of local parking infrastructure.

Accessibility and loading zones

  • Vehicles displaying a valid Mobility Parking Scheme (MPS) permit can park for free in any legal parking space, including standard bays and those designated for disabled drivers.
  • Several new accessible parking bays have been installed throughout the CBD. Each bay includes a marked “shared space”, which is not to be used for parking, but assists with vehicle access.
  • Loading zones remain strictly for commercial vehicles actively loading or unloading goods—these help support local businesses and should not be used for general parking.

Council has advised that further minor changes to the parking network are expected to roll out in the coming months. Drivers are encouraged to remain aware of current signage and to check for updates regularly.
