NERAM celebrates win as Best Gallery in the New England

The New England Regional Art Museum (NERAM) in Armidale has taken out the title of Best Art Gallery in the New England in the latest Best in the New England (BITNE) awards. The win is a testament to the gallery’s enduring impact on the cultural life of the region, as well as its growing reputation as one of Australia’s leading regional arts institutions.

NERAM has long been a cornerstone of the Armidale arts community and a major drawcard for visitors from across New South Wales and beyond. Housing more than 5,000 works of art across six impressive galleries, the museum is home to three nationally significant collections: the Howard Hinton Collection, the Chandler Coventry Collection, and the NERAM Collection. Together, these represent an extraordinary archive of Australian art history, from the colonial period right through to contemporary works.

“A gem in a regional area. The Howard Hinton Collection – astounding. The range of art and the combined collection of over 5,000 artworks. The community engagement – from toddlers to the elderly, and people of all abilities. It has to be the regional winner, hands down!” said Margaret.

In recent years, NERAM has gained national attention not just for its collections, but for its dynamic and diverse exhibition program, which brings together touring shows, local artists, and curated exhibitions that spark conversation and connection. Its landmark exhibitions have included works by Margaret Olley, Sidney Nolan, and Brett Whiteley, alongside thought-provoking shows that highlight emerging voices and social issues.

“As well as having the best regional art collection in the state it has a continuing program of exhibitions and activities that cover the widest range of interests, skills and activities. There is no other gallery in New England to match it,” said Susie.

NERAM is also a leader in arts education and outreach. Through programs such as art classes, workshops, school excursions, and artist talks, the museum provides opportunities for all ages to engage with visual arts. Its popular “NERAM Nights” series has helped make art accessible to a new generation, combining live music, food, and exhibitions in a relaxed and welcoming setting.

“They hold an amazing collection of Australian art. They display beautiful & eclectic works of art & sculptures. There is also a shop & wonderful cafe that has the most delicious meals,” said Lenore.

Importantly, the gallery is also a key player in regional tourism and economic development. With more than 50,000 visitors annually, NERAM contributes significantly to the cultural economy of the New England area. Its café, gift shop, and events calendar help to create a thriving hub at the heart of Armidale’s creative precinct.

In a Facebook post, the Gallery thanked the community for their votes, saying, “Thanks to the community to voting NERAM the best museum or gallery in New England! We are open this weekend, so pop in to see why we are #1.”

NERAM’s win in the BITNE competition reflects not just the calibre of its collections and programming but also the passion and dedication of its staff, volunteers, and supporters. With big plans on the horizon—including new exhibitions, collaborations, and community projects—NERAM’s future looks as bold and inspiring as the artwork it proudly displays.
