The tiny village of Deepwater came alive on Saturday, 24 January 2026, as more than 3,000 visitors descended on the New England town for one of the most anticipated days on the regional racing calendar.
With a proud history stretching back over 160 years, the Deepwater Jockey Club once again proved why it’s one of Australia’s oldest and most cherished racing institutions. On race day, the population of this normally quiet village – home to just 400 people – swelled nearly tenfold, transforming Deepwater into a bustling hub of racing, fashion and family fun.
Visitors poured in from across the region and interstate, with large contingents making the trip from Toowoomba, Brisbane, and beyond – a testament to the event’s growing appeal across state borders.
The atmosphere was electric, helped along by perfect summer weather and a warm country welcome. The meeting also drew the attention of federal politics, with Senator Ross Cadell of the NSW National Party in attendance – a reflection of the event’s cultural and economic significance to the New England region.

Fashions on the Field added plenty of flair to the day, with a strong line-up of stylish entrants turning heads trackside. Some of the outfits were nothing short of showstoppers.

In order (L–R) – 3rd – Margaret from Casino, 1st – Neva from Brisbane, Jenni Carseldine (Judge), and 2nd – Casey, Glen Innes
On the track, the feature race – the Deepwater Cup (1400m) – delivered plenty of excitement, with Under The Cap storming home to take the win, followed by Unleash in second and Capo Strada in third.

Behind the scenes, the event ran smoothly thanks to the tireless efforts of volunteers and local community groups, whose dedication helped ensure everything went off without a hitch.
All up, the 2026 Deepwater Races were a celebration of country spirit, community pride, and top-quality racing – a truly memorable day out in the New England.
