Headspace launches new hobby groups to help young people connect

Headspace Armidale is inviting young people aged 12 to 25 to get creative, social, and inspired through a new series of hobby and connection groups launching in November.

From writing and reading to arts and crafts, these new weekly sessions aim to offer a relaxed and welcoming space where young people can try something new, meet others, and explore their interests — all while supporting their mental wellbeing.

Centre Manager and Senior Psychologist Rhonda Partridge said the initiative stemmed from a growing interest among local young people in creative and social activities.

“What we have organised to commence in November are arts and crafts starting on 6 November, a writing group starting on 10 November, and a book club starting on 25 November,” Ms Partridge said.

Each group will be held at headspace Armidale, with no need to book ahead. Young people are encouraged to drop in to whichever session sparks their interest.

The new additions will complement the centre’s already popular Dungeons and Dragons group, which has been running for nearly a year and is currently at capacity.

“Our Dungeons and Dragons group has met weekly for the last ten months and has been incredibly successful,” Ms Partridge said.

Following the success of these programs, the team is also exploring further creative options for the future.

“We are gauging interest in both a photography and videography group to commence at a later date if we have enough participants,” Ms Partridge added.

The sessions have been designed to be casual, inclusive, and most importantly — fun. Whether it’s putting pen to paper in the Writing Group on Mondays, chatting about favourite novels in the Book Club on Tuesdays, or getting hands-on with paint, clay, or collage at Arts & Crafternoons on Thursdays, there’s something for everyone.

The schedule is as follows:

  • Writing Group – Mondays, 3:30–4:30pm (starting 10 November)
  • Book Club – Tuesdays, 3:30–4:30pm (starting 25 November)
  • Arts & Crafternoons – Thursdays, 3:45–4:45pm (starting 6 November)

Headspace Armidale provides free and confidential support to young people aged 12 to 25 across mental health, physical health, work, and study. The centre’s friendly team includes mental health professionals, youth workers, and clinicians who work together to help young people navigate life’s challenges in a supportive environment.

Young people who want to make a difference can also get involved through the headspace Armidale Youth Reference Group (YRG). The group gives 14–24-year-olds the chance to have their voices heard, advocate for youth needs in the community, and help shape future projects and events. Members meet monthly, learning how to design and deliver initiatives, develop leadership skills, and work alongside others passionate about youth wellbeing and community connection.
