Two killed in separate crashes

The New England region has been left reeling after two people were killed in separate crashes on Thursday, and a woman was charged over a double fatal crash earlier this year.

Emergency services were called to the Newell Highway, south of Moree, about 7.30pm on Thursday, 18 September, following reports of a crash. Police from the New England Police District found a car and a truck had collided, causing the car to roll.

The driver of the car, a 21-year-old woman, died at the scene. The 24-year-old male truck driver was uninjured. Specialist officers from the Crash Investigation Unit attended, and a report will be prepared for the coroner.

Just hours earlier, another life was lost in a single-vehicle crash on Strathbogie Road at Emmaville, about 26 kilometres north-west of Glen Innes. Emergency services were called about 4.50pm and found that a ute had left the roadway and hit a number of trees.

An 82-year-old man was located unresponsive inside the vehicle. Despite efforts from NSW Ambulance paramedics, he could not be revived. Police established a crime scene and commenced inquiries, with a report also to be prepared for the coroner.

The tragedies come as police confirmed a Glen Innes woman has been charged over a fatal crash earlier this year that claimed the lives of two men.

Emergency services were called to Droneys Bridge Road, Fairy Hill, about 10pm on Wednesday, 26 March, after reports of a vehicle submerged in the Richmond River. One of the occupants, a 23-year-old woman, was able to escape uninjured, but with the help of Police Rescue and SES crews, the bodies of two men, aged 26 and 27, were recovered from the vehicle.

After extensive inquiries, police arrested the 23-year-old woman at Glen Innes on Thursday afternoon. She was charged with two counts of dangerous driving occasioning death, drive manner dangerous, negligent driving occasioning death, and driving during a disqualification period.

Police will allege in court that the woman was behind the wheel when the car crashed into the river. She was refused bail to appear before Bail Division Court 5 today (Friday, 19 September).

Police have urged anyone with information about the recent crashes at Moree and Emmaville to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online at nsw.crimestoppers.com.au.
