Sweeney tops Tamworth tennis championship

Tamworth has wrapped up its first Professional Tennis Tournament with Dane Sweeney claiming his fifth championship title.

Sweeney had to work for the win, going up against fellow Aussie, Marc Polmans, who took an early 2-1 lead in the second game with a break, followed by the first set, 6-2.

But, as we have seen in many matches this week, momentum shifted in favour of the top seed Sweeney, who came back to secure the next two sets, 6-4 and 6-3, and the crown.

Adam Pengilly, spokesperson for Tennis NSW, says the overall feedback from players so far has been phenomenal.

“The reviews from the players about the courts, the surfaces, and the training facilities have been fantastic.” said Pengilly.

“And not only just the tennis centre itself, but also the town. They’ve had a great time spending time in the New England region.”

“We’ve noticed that we’ve had really good support from a lot of the locals. The crowds have been quite good throughout the course of the last week or so.”

While the winner has been crowned in week one, there is still plenty of tennis to come as athletes move into a fresh competition from today.

A clean slate and all players back on the table, crowds will be able to see these athletes feature again on local courts.

Entry is free and you can head to the International Tennis Federation website to see the draw and follow results.
