Pathfinders’ Pumpkins Hit the Road Again to Support Communities in Need

The Pathfinders Pumpkin Run returns in 2025, with young people from across Pathfinders’ programs digging in, quite literally, to grow, harvest, and hand-deliver tonnes of fresh pumpkins to those doing it tough across New South Wales.

Since planting more than a thousand seeds back in November, these young participants have worked side by side at Tilbuster Station, nurturing the pumpkin patch through every stage of growth. From soil preparation and weed management to regular watering and crop care, they’ve done it all, gaining hands-on skills, building confidence, and giving back to communities in need along the way.

“Pumpkin Run is about more than just giving back,” said Pathfinders CEO Alan Brennan.

“It’s about teaching responsibility, teamwork and the satisfaction of contributing to something bigger than yourself. Our young people are learning practical skills while also making a real difference in their communities.”

Last week, teams of young people took part in working bee sessions at Tilbuster Station to begin harvesting this year’s crop. Over five tonnes of pumpkins were picked and carefully packed into boxes, ready for delivery to food charities, women’s and children’s refuges, across the New England, Mid North Coast and down to Newcastle and Sydney.

In the lead-up to the Pumpkin Run, young people will also be cooking pre-prepared pumpkin meals to be delivered around the New England region, supporting local food relief organisations ahead of winter.

The Pumpkin Run will officially depart Tilbuster Station on Monday, 19 May, with the final stop at Government House, Sydney, where participants will be hosted for a special morning tea with the NSW Governor, Her Excellency Margaret Beazley AC KC.

Now in its 11th year, the Pumpkin Run continues to grow and provide not only thousands of meals for vulnerable Australians, but also empowers young people to develop new skills and pride in community contribution.
