Glen Innes moves to Level 2 water restrictions

Glen Innes Severn Council has introduced Level 2 water restrictions for Glen Innes following inspections of Beardy Weir, the town’s main water supply.

Inspections confirmed water levels at the weir had reached the trigger point for Level 2 restrictions under Council’s Drought Management Plan.

General Manager Bernard Smith said the move was part of Council’s planned response to managing water supplies during dry conditions.

“These trigger points are in place so decisions are made early and consistently,” Smith said.

“They allow Council to manage water use before greater pressure is placed on the system.”

Smith said it was important the community understood the current water position.

“Beardy Weir currently holds about 320 megalitres of water,” he said.

“Glen Innes is also supported by two off-stream storage pits, which are full and together hold another 500 megalitres.”

Smith said the restrictions were about responsible water use and community cooperation.

“By acting early under the Drought Management Plan, we can reduce pressure on the system and help avoid the need for more severe restrictions if dry conditions continue,” he said.

Deepwater has its own water supply and is not currently affected by the restrictions.

Level 2 water restrictions place additional limits on non-essential water use, including garden watering and vehicle washing.

Council’s Integrated Water Services team will continue monitoring conditions at Beardy Weir and review restriction levels as required under the Drought Management Plan.

Residents and businesses can check what is permitted under Level 2 water restrictions at www.gisc.nsw.gov.au and are encouraged to continue using water wisely.
