Tributes flow for Uralla Shire Councillor Lone Petrov

Lone Petrov (Uralla Shire Council)

Uralla Shire is mourning the loss of Councillor Leonie Christine “Lone” Petrov, who passed away in hospital on Sunday 8 February after a short illness. She was 74.

Uralla Shire Councillors and staff said they were deeply saddened by the loss of their beloved colleague, describing Councillor Petrov as a valued and dedicated member of the Uralla community.

She was known for her kindness, her caring nature and her strong involvement in community life. Her passing will be felt by many across the shire, with Council noting she made a positive difference in many people’s lives.

Councillor Petrov, of Thunderbolts Way, Uralla, was the beloved wife of Michael, a valued TCS volunteer driver, and a loving mother and mother-in-law of Jodie and Andrew, Chris and Jill, and Ryan and Natalie. She was a much loved grandmother to Grace, Chloe, Madeline, Oliver, Tobias, Teah and Eli, and a loved sister, sister-in-law, aunt and great-aunt.

Member for Northern Tablelands Brendan Moylan also paid tribute.

“I’m very saddened by the passing of Uralla Councillor Lone Petrov, who passed away in hospital on Sunday after a short illness,” Mr Moylan said.

“Lone was a very much loved councillor and a deeply dedicated member of the Uralla community, she will be greatly missed.

“My thoughts are with her family, friends and colleagues.”

Tributes have flowed online, with many acknowledging her long service to the community through the Helping Children and Families Association, where she supported local families for many years and served as President of the Management Committee, or her special role in people’s life moments as a celebrant.

A full service will be held on Monday 16 February, commencing at 10.30am at the Uralla Uniting Church and Hall, 18 Hill Street, Uralla. To enable staff to attend the service and pay their respects, Council offices and front-line services will be closed from 10am to 1pm on Monday.

The vacancy in Ward A of Uralla Shire Council will be filled by a by-election. The count back process used in some councils is not possible in this case, as there were no unelected candidates at the 2024 election.

Further details about the funeral for Lone Petrov are available from Piddingtons.
