Help deliver the 2026 Census – Jobs now open

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is recruiting more than 2,700 Field Managers as preparations ramp up for the 2026 Census.

Field Managers will play a key role in supporting communities across Australia to complete the Census, overseeing teams of up to 12 Field Officers in their local areas.

ABS Census spokesperson Emily Walter said that, where possible, Field Managers would be recruited locally to provide on-the-ground knowledge and support.

“To run a successful Census, we need to reach everyone across Australia, from our capital cities to our most remote towns,” Ms Walter said.

“While we expect most people will choose to complete the Census online, there are many people who will require extra support. Field Managers will play a key role in providing this support.”

As part of their responsibilities, Field Managers will also assist locations such as hotels, hospitals and caravan parks to prepare, ensuring people who are not in private dwellings on Census night are counted.

“We’re looking for people who have experience training and supervising teams, and who are interested in flexible, temporary work beginning in April 2026,” Ms Walter said.

In addition to Field Managers, the ABS is currently hiring Local Engagement Officers. These roles seek applicants with experience working with diverse groups, including people experiencing homelessness, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, culturally and linguistically diverse populations, and individuals who speak languages other than English.

In the coming weeks, recruitment will also open for roles including Mobile Field Representatives, Remote Area Management team members and leaders, and Community Field Officers.

What is the Census?
The Census provides a detailed snapshot of Australia’s population and housing. The data helps inform government, business and community decisions on services such as transport, schools, health care and infrastructure.

For example, Census data helps determine where doctors are needed in remote areas, and links people to community services by identifying local birth rates and languages spoken at home.
