Across New England and the Northwest, Australia Day 2026 was a day of pride, celebration, and community spirit as councils welcomed new Australian citizens and recognised outstanding locals.

In Gunnedah, three residents—Sherwin Galeon Camarin, Cyril Joules Matias Lim, and Reynaldo Saludes—took the citizenship pledge under the gum trees at Anzac Park. Originally from the Philippines, all three praised Gunnedah for its quiet, peaceful lifestyle and strong sense of community.

Mayor Colleen Fuller welcomed the new citizens, saying, “It’s always wonderful to add to the diversity of our community. People from all over the globe live among us, bringing elements of their own cultures and enriching our Shire.”

The celebrations extended across the region. In Tamworth, 96 new residents were welcomed at a ceremony at the Tamworth War Memorial Town Hall, attended by Mayor Russell Webb and Councillors Matt Sharpham and Mark Rodda, alongside the presentation of the Australia Day Awards.

Moree Plains Council also celebrated nine new residents, highlighting the shared values and unity of their diverse community.

In Armidale, 72 new citizens joined the community during a day of awards, a Citizenship Ceremony, and a Beach Party at Dumaresq Dam. Community groups, volunteers, and elders contributed to a vibrant celebration despite the heat. Inverell and Uralla also held memorable ceremonies, with six residents welcomed in Uralla.

Brendan Moylan MP said the new citizens “have chosen to make their home in the Paris of the Tablelands!” and congratulated award winners, including Wayne Howard, named Uralla Citizen of the Year.

Narrabri Shire proudly recognised eight new citizens and acknowledged the contributions of outstanding local community members. “Thank you for choosing to make our Shire and Australia your home!” the Council said.

Liverpool Plains Shire Council hosted its Australia Day Awards and Citizenship Ceremony at Club Quirindi, welcoming four new citizens: Corin William Tyser Gibbs, Joel Jacob, Heljo Nijo, and Elizabeth Nijo. The event celebrated both the new Australians and the Shire’s dedicated community members.

From small towns to regional hubs, Australia Day 2026 highlighted the region’s diversity, community pride, and the welcoming spirit that defines New England and the Northwest.
