Three celebrations were held across Inverell Shire on Monday as locals gathered to recognise outstanding contributions made by community members, who were awarded Australia Day honours.
“Australia Day is a time to reflect, respect, and celebrate. It is a chance for us to reflect on the past, present and future, and a chance for us to listen to each other’s stories, contributions, and aspirations,” said Inverell Shire Council Mayor, Cr Kate Dight.
“Each year the Australia Day Committee calls for nominations of local legends who devote their time and efforts to the Inverell community.”

“Huge congratulations to our fantastic and extremely worthy Australia Day nominees. Your hard work, dedication, and commitment to our community have been duly recognised.”
Alistair Williams was named Inverell’s Citizen of the Year, acknowledged for his 40 years of commitment, passion, devotion, and selflessness in serving the Inverell community.
In Delungra, Tom Retallack received the Citizen of the Year – Delungra award, recognising his dedicated service to the local area. Azariah Dewberry was named Young Citizen of the Year, while Delungra Hotel – Shear 4 Life received the Community Group of the Year award.
In Tingha, sisters Bridgette and Tabatha Jerrard were jointly awarded Citizen of the Year – Tingha, marking an inspiring win for the community. The 2025 Tingha Tigers Ladies League Tag Team was recognised as Sports Team of the Year.
“We warmly congratulate all recipients of the Australia Day Awards. We are thrilled to recognise all the hard work and commitment these winners have given to our communities,” said Mayor Dight.
“With special guests Brendan Moylan MP and Australia Day Ambassador Emma Rossi in attendance, we hosted a fabulous Australia Day celebration breakfast prepared by Macintyre Lions Club in Victoria Park, Inverell,” she said.
“Dinner festivities and live entertainment were held in the evening at the Sport and Recreation Club in Tingha. It was terrific to see so many come out to support our community and appreciate the wonderful society in which we live. We all belong to and contribute to our communities, and it was an opportunity to reflect, respect, and to celebrate!”
