Airport café farewell as The Alternate Root closes Armidale location

After successfully supplying travellers and locals alike with quality coffee, hearty meals and warm hospitality since 2023, The Alternate Root Café has announced the closure of its Armidale Airport location, turning off the machine for the last time on December 24.

Owner Berdine Warne described the decision as “difficult,” noting that the café had built strong connections with its regular airport customers. “We will miss our regular airport customers. Who knows where we might pop up next…” Ms Warne said in a recent social media update.

The news has prompted an outpouring of support and sadness from patrons online, with many regulars expressing their disappointment at losing what they described as one of the airport’s standout features. For many, the café had become more than just a pre-flight stop — it was a place to relax, meet friends and enjoy well-crafted coffee and food.

Despite the airport closure, the heart of The Alternate Root remains very much alive in the nearby town of Uralla, where the café’s flagship venue continues to serve the community and visitors seven days a week. Located in the historic Trikett’s building on Bridge Street, the Uralla café is known for its quality coffee, seasonal menus featuring local produce, and relaxed yet vibrant atmosphere.

The Uralla space is more than just a coffee stop, it’s a community hub. Patrons can enjoy breakfast and lunch services daily, with Friday and Saturday nights offering extended dinner and bar menus, as well as special public events such as live music, trivia nights and theme evenings. The café also doubles as an events venue, available for private gatherings, celebrations and even weddings, reflecting its integral role in the local social scene.

The business has earned a strong reputation beyond its airport stint. In mid-2025, The Alternate Root in Uralla was crowned Best Coffee in the New England region, a testament to its dedication to quality blends, sustainable sourcing and a welcoming experience for all customers.

Owner Ms Warne and co-owner Andy Neary – who joined the business after first working behind the coffee machine – have emphasised the importance of community support in the cafe’s ongoing success. The Uralla venue remains a place “where everyone feels welcome,” a philosophy that has helped it flourish amid regional challenges.

While the airport café’s closure marks the end of a chapter, locals are hopeful that the spirit of The Alternate Root will endure — especially at its Uralla home, where community, culture and great coffee continue to bring people together.
