As Christmas approaches, one Inverell organisation is preparing to spread warmth, connection and festive cheer in a way that truly embodies the spirit of giving. Food for the Soul is once again hosting its annual A Taste of Christmas event, offering a free takeaway Christmas meal for anyone in the community who may need a little extra support or simply appreciates the gesture during what can be a difficult time of year.
The event will take place on Christmas Eve, 24 December, behind the Salvation Army Church Hall at 35 Vivian Street, with meals available for pickup between 2pm and 3pm. While the meal is free and open to everyone, organisers encourage people to register ahead of time.
Event organiser and coordinator for Food for the Soul, Zoe Hannam, tells us this will be the 6th Christmas that they’ve celebrated with the Inverell Community.
“We’ll be sticking with the takeaway style format again this year, as it was a huge success for last Christmas,” said Ms Hannam.
“Every recipient will get a bag with a full Christmas meal, a drink, Christmas plates and napkins and a small gift.”
“We really encourage people who do plan on attending to come down with a picnic rug and enjoy their meal with other attendees.”
Food for the Soul has long been known for its commitment to ensuring no one in Inverell feels alone or overlooked, particularly during the holidays. The Christmas Eve meal has become a meaningful tradition—one that offers not just food, but dignity, inclusion and a sense of community at a time when it matters most.
Last year saw over 50 people attend the Christmas Eve dinner, and Ms Hannam tells us she’s preparing for around 60 this year, but would be happy to cater for as many as 100.
Organisers say the goal is simple: to make sure every person, regardless of circumstances, has an opportunity to enjoy a festive meal and feel connected to their community. They emphasise that there are no eligibility criteria. The initiative is designed to be welcoming and pressure-free, ensuring anyone who needs a meal, a moment of joy, or a reminder that their community cares can come forward.
“I’ve always kept the policy that all are welcome, regardless of financial circumstances. First of all you never really know what is going on in people’s lives, second of all sometimes the company and sense of community is more important than the food itself, and finally I also think it gives those who perhaps are a bit more well of financially a good sense of perspective to come along and chat with and support others who perhaps are struggling,” said Ms Hannam.
Behind the scenes, volunteers are busy planning, preparing and coordinating to ensure the day runs smoothly. From sourcing ingredients to cooking, packing, and handing out meals, the effort reflects the generosity and teamwork of local residents and supporters. Most of the food is sourced from local suppliers, and Ms Hannam outsources to local butchers and grocers to aid in the preparation as much as possible. Many volunteers return year after year, motivated by the knowledge that even a single meal can make a meaningful difference to someone’s Christmas.
“We’ve been overwhelmed with the support and assistance offered by the community,” said Ms Hannam.
“We always welcome more volunteers, but I also think the biggest help we could get is to just get the word out more about the service that we offer, not only at Christmas but also for our Wednesday night dinners – we’d love to see participation numbers much higher than what we have seen this year.”
Food for the Soul also acknowledges the support of local donors and partners who help make the event possible. Whether through contributions of food, funds or time, each gesture helps create a Christmas Eve meal that is both nourishing and filled with heart.
As the organisers prepare for this year’s event, they encourage the community to spread the word to anyone who may benefit. For many, A Taste of Christmas is more than a meal—it’s a reminder of the power of kindness, the importance of connection, and the enduring strength of community.
