Bundarra to host major RFS training exercise this weekend

Bundarra will come alive tomorrow (Saturday 1 November) as it hosts the New England District Exercise, a coordinated training event involving Rural Fire Service (RFS) volunteers from across the region.

The large-scale exercise will allow RFS members to practise their core skills while testing the readiness, interoperability, and response capabilities of multiple crews from within the New England Zone. The focus will be on enhancing team coordination and communication — and having a bit of fun in a relaxed community setting.

Also taking part in the day will be New England First Aid instructors and Community Engagement specialists, who will provide demonstrations, first aid techniques, and information about fire preparedness and how to join the RFS.

Inspector Matthew McKean, Acting New England District Manager, said Bundarra was chosen as the ideal location due to its strong community spirit and strategic importance in the district.

“Bundarra has been selected for its community spirit and strategic importance in the district,” Inspector McKean said. “Exercises like this are vital for improving preparedness, teamwork and ensuring that crews of all abilities can operate seamlessly together when a real emergency occurs.”

Residents can expect to see an increased emergency services presence throughout the day, with multiple RFS appliances and members operating in the area. Organisers emphasise that all activities are controlled training simulations designed to build operational capability and strengthen community ties.

Locals are encouraged to come along and observe the activities, with opportunities to take part where invited. Information stalls, first aid demonstrations, and preparedness resources will be available opposite the Bundarra Caravan Park in Court Street from 10:00am.

“This is not just a test for responders — it’s an opportunity for residents to understand the importance of readiness and resilience,” Inspector McKean said.

“We want to make Bundarra one of the most prepared communities in the region.”

The exercise is scheduled to conclude by 1:00pm, followed by a debrief involving all participating agencies and community stakeholders.

The RFS encourages everyone in the area to take the opportunity to meet their local volunteers, learn more about emergency preparedness, and discover how to get involved in supporting community safety.
