It’s not yet November, but the Christmas appeals have begun with the Salvos readying for a big demand as the tough economic conditions make this time of year a bit harder for many of our neighbours.

Gunnedah Shire families in need are the focus of the Gunnedah Community Christmas Tree Toy Appeal. Gunnedah Shire Council is partnering with the Gunnedah Salvation Army for the annual initiative, which calls on community members to donate gifts to those in need over Christmas.

Gunnedah Shire Mayor Colleen Fuller said with living expenses still on the rise, it was becoming more and more difficult for families to celebrate Christmas in a cost-effective way.

“When we think about Christmas, we think about giving, and that’s exactly what we are asking our community to do – to give to those who need it most,” she said.

“This is the twelfth year Council has partnered with the Salvation Army, and over that time, hundreds of families have been blessed by the generosity of our residents. This is one way of connecting our community through compassion.

“I encourage locals to add a gift or two, or even three, under the Christmas tree this year and help spread joy throughout our Shire.”

New and unwrapped gifts can be placed under the Christmas tree located at Gunnedah Shire Council’s Administration Building (63 Elgin Street, Gunnedah) and at the Gunnedah Shire Library (291 Conadilly St, Gunnedah).

Gift ideas include toys, clothing and accessories, books, sporting goods, games, beauty products and gift vouchers. Locals are also encouraged to consider selecting gifts appropriate for older children.

For health and hygiene reasons, food items and pre-loved toys are unable to be donated.

Donations must be received before 5pm on Friday, 5 December 2025 and will be distributed to local families in the lead-up to Christmas.

All New Englanders can support The Salvation Army’s wider New England North West Christmas Appeal, which aims to support those doing it tough across the region.

“The Salvos can’t support people this Christmas without the generosity of our local community, so we would love to see everyone dig deep this year in whatever capacity you are able to,” said Mark Campbell, External Communication Manager for NSW.

“For the Salvos, Christmas is the busiest time of the year, and this year will be no different.

“All year, we have been journeying alongside the New England community, and we know that Christmas will prove to be a real challenge for many people.

“For some, the idea of celebrating Christmas may seem out of reach, as they can’t even work out where their next meal or utility bill will come from, both for themselves and their children.

“That’s why The Salvos are here, to support you when you need it most,” he said.

“Whether it is for practical support like food or presents, or if you are feeling lonely or isolated this Christmas, please reach out to The Salvation Army. We are here for you.”

Nationally last Christmas, The Salvation Army received over 350,000 gifts and toys, provided more than 177,000 meals to people experiencing homelessness, and delivered over 89,000 bed nights for families in need of accommodation .

Donations to The Salvation Army’s Christmas Appeal can be made online at salvationarmy.org.au, at any Salvos Store, or by calling 13 SALVOS (13 72 58).
