Duval Dam Buster postponed to December

The annual Duval Dam Buster (DDB) Trail Run has been postponed to Sunday, 7 December for safety reasons after fallen trees and other damage from last month’s snowstorm could not be cleared in time for next weekend.

The event, originally scheduled for 21 September, is organised by the DDB committee consisting of passionate trail running locals and community members. Organiser Lee-Anne McKinnon said they are disappointed but are hopeful the hundreds of runners that have already registered can join them in December.

The event is now in its eighth year and provides runners from near and far the opportunity to enjoy the trails, some of which are only open during this event, on Mt Duval, the largest peak in the area, which dominates the Armidale skyline.

“There’s something for everyone, including a 3-kilometre family/kids fun run/walk, an 8-kilometre, and a 16-kilometre event,” Ms McKinnon said.

“For those wishing to test their endurance, we also have a 28-kilometre event and a 50-kilometre ultra-marathon.”

“I believe it’s the only ultra-marathon in New England.”

Runners in the 16km, 28km, and 50km events will climb the highest point in the area at 1400m above sea level, where they will enjoy the beautiful woodland and native grasses of the Duval Nature Reserve at the top of Mt Duval.

Ms McKinnon said for safety reasons, age limits apply to the various stages.

“Children are encouraged to take part in the 3-kilometre Duval Dash, with those under 12 accompanied by an adult or guardian over the age of 18, who must always remain with the child.”

“The track is not suitable for prams.”

The 8km Duval Base Run is for those 8 years and over, and anyone under 12 must also be accompanied by an adult.

Ms McKinnon said young athletes 14 years and over can participate in the 16km run, with many already registered.

“For the 28-kilometre Duval Almost Dirty Thirty, entry will be restricted to 18 years and over and the tough race – the 50-kilometre Hendo Hustle Ultra-marathon – also only eligible for those aged from 18 years.”

“Special consideration for young, elite athletes will be provided upon request and agreement with coaches and parents or guardians.”

Ms McKinnon urged participants and their families and friends to come and explore the beautiful Dumaresq Dam Reserve and Mt Duval areas near Armidale.

“Armidale is surrounded by four national parks, all within a 1–2-hour drive and well worth a visit.”

“There’s a lot to see and do in the region and fantastic tourist drives in the New England High Country.”

“The area is spectacular, and the mountain is very significant for the local Aboriginal people, and we ask that everyone who participates in the event respects and appreciates it.”

All events, hosted by Armidale Athletics Club, start from a marshalling area at the Dumaresq Dam Reserve, about 12km from the Armidale CBD.

To reach the start point, follow Booroolong Road past the University of New England, then turn right onto Dumaresq Dam Road for about 5km to the Dumaresq Dam picnic area.

Late registrations have now been extended until 5 December. Those who had already registered and are unable to take part in December are asked to contact the DDB team to defer their registration to 2026 or make other arrangements.
