A bright new chapter for Hobbit Preschool and Child Care Centre

One of Armidale’s longest-standing child care centres is entering a new era of growth and renewal under the ownership of Jeff Sun.

Originally established in 1973 under the auspices of the University of New England, Hobbit Preschool and Child Care Centre is now undergoing major updates—both inside and out—to align with modern early childhood education standards.

Mr Sun, who took over the centre three months ago, has wasted no time in making improvements.

“I originally worked in banking,” he said. “But I moved into childcare 8 years ago and I now own 2 centres in Sydney, as well as Hobbit.”

“I really enjoy the relationships that you get to build with staff and the families who attend the centres, and the ability to create centres and programs that are interesting and educational.”

Since taking over, Mr Sun has replaced all the flooring and has begun what he calls a general “freshen up” of the facility.

“We are also changing the configurations of the rooms as well,” he explained. “Previously Hobbit only had a toddler room and then an older room. We are adding a third room that will add a transition space for those who have outgrown the toddler room but are not yet older for a preschool room.”

This new layout includes a dedicated preschool room for children preparing to start school the following year.

“The preschool room will be exclusively for those who are preparing for school the following year, and we’re working really closely with local schools to tweak the program to improve outcomes for school readiness.”

Importantly, the existing staff have remained on through the transition, with Mr Sun expressing his appreciation for their continued dedication.

“The staff are fantastic and I’m really leaning on them to give me feedback as to what they want and need for children as we renovate and improve the different spaces for our children,” he said.

The centre has remained open throughout the renovation process, which is now nearing completion.

Looking ahead, Mr Sun is preparing to relaunch the centre’s online presence with updated social media and a new website. He’s also planning a community open day.

“We are very excited to meet the community and share with them how proud we all are of the changes that we’ve made to Hobbit – at this stage we’re looking at Saturday October 11 for the open day but we will be sharing further details and confirming this date closer to the time.”

Hobbit Preschool and Child Care Centre is located on Martin Street in Armidale. To learn more or to book a tour, call 02 6772 4746.
