The Wyz Wimmin & Friends Theatre Company, renowned for its commitment to contemporary Australian narratives, is set to present their latest production, This is Me, at the Armidale Playhouse on Saturday, June 21.
Formed nearly a decade ago in the Nambucca Valley, the company has garnered acclaim for its poignant and humorous storytelling. This is Me is a compelling collection of seven monologues that delve into the intricacies of everyday life.
Directed by Anne Joyce, the production features a diverse array of characters, some funny, some dramatic and all very relatable.
“They’re all very powerful characters and one of the things we keep hearing from audiences is that they are characters that really resonate with them.” said Playwright and founding member of Wyz Wimmin Theatre Company Carrolline Rhodes.
The play has already captivated audiences across the Nambucca Valley, Bellingen, and Kempsey, with attendees praising it as the company’s most powerful collection to date.
“January next year will mark Wyz Wimmin’s 10-year anniversary and we are all so very proud of what we do,” said Ms Rhodes.
“We have really made so much more than a theatre company, we’re an incredible tribe of people who have created our own opportunities and the relationships we’ve formed are so special.”
The trip to Armidale is a special one for one specific cast member, Liz Ellis. Ms Ellis has spent a number of years making the commute to the coast to rehearse and perform with Wyz Wimmin, but will this year get to take to the stage with them, in front of a home crowd.
“We’re a unique group and I think it is this uniqueness that attracts audiences,” said Ms Rhodes.
“Our average age is over 70, our outstanding director is 86 – I like to think this is evidence that age shouldn’t define us, it should inspire us.”
“We’re all very experienced, we’re in the prime of our craft and we are very confident about what we deliver.”
This will likely be audience’s last opportunity to see This is Me brought to life on the stage, with Ms Rhodes saying that the one night only performance in Armidale, will most probably be its last.
Tickets for the Armidale performance are priced at $25 and can be purchased through the Armidale Playhouse website. Please note that the production contains adult themes and language and is not suitable for children.
