Teenagers charged following counter terrorism investigation in Moree

Two teenage boys have been charged following an investigation by the NSW Joint Counter Terrorism Team (JCTT), with authorities stating there is no ongoing threat to the community.

Police will allege the investigation began in December 2025, when officers attached to New England Police District received information that a teenager was accessing extremist material online.

Following inquiries, investigators executed a Commonwealth search warrant at a home in Moree on 27 March 2026. During the search, police allegedly seized a mobile phone, a ballistic-style vest and several notebooks.

A 15-year-old boy was charged in relation to that investigation and remains before the courts.

After further forensic examination of the seized material, the matter was referred to the NSW JCTT. Additional search warrants were executed at two homes in Moree on Thursday, 2 April 2026.

Police will allege officers located and seized handwritten notes and literature containing extremist references.

A 15-year-old boy was arrested about 10am and taken to Moree Police Station. He was charged with using a carriage service to transmit violent extremist material and knowingly collecting or making a document connected with terrorism.

A 16-year-old boy was arrested about 11.30am and taken to Moree Police Station. He was charged with using a carriage service to possess violent extremist material.

Both boys were refused bail and appeared before Parramatta Children’s Court on Friday, 3 April 2026.

Authorities have stated the charges relate to the alleged possession and creation of material, and there is no indication of any specific or imminent threat to the community.

The NSW JCTT is made up of officers from NSW Police, the Australian Federal Police, the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation and the NSW Crime Commission.

Anyone with information about extremist activity is urged to contact the National Security Hotline on 1800 123 400.
