A Moree schoolgirl is making waves on the national music scene, with 17-year-old Gomeroi singer-songwriter Kyla Belle releasing her latest single Took A Turn.
The track features acclaimed Indigenous artist Nooky, of 3%, and follows Kyla’s win in the 2025 Triple J Unearthed High Indigenous Initiative, cementing her place as one of Australia’s most promising emerging artists.
A country-influenced anthem with a strong hook, Took A Turn began as part of a mentorship opportunity through her Unearthed High prize, but quickly evolved into a full creative collaboration between the two artists.
“This song tells the story of my life and how things always take a turn for the better,” Kyla said.
“It talks about hardships, then overcoming them through music. I wrote this song just like I write all my music, on my bedroom floor, aiming for a song that sticks to your brain.”
Recorded in Sydney earlier this year, the single showcases Kyla’s signature storytelling and raw authenticity, alongside Nooky’s contribution.
The track builds on the success of her previous release Sweetheart, which was named Triple J Unearthed Track of the Day and gained strong playlist support across major streaming platforms.
Took A Turn has already been added to Triple J and Triple J Unearthed, while also landing on major Spotify and Apple Music playlists, including Big Ancestor Energy, Heaps Country and New Music Daily.
Kyla’s rapid rise has also been recognised through the Outstanding Achievement in Creative and Performing Arts Award at the 2025 Nanga Mai Awards.
Despite her growing national profile, Kyla continues to balance her music career with school at Moree Secondary College and remains closely connected to her community.
She regularly performs with her family band, featuring her father on guitar, mother on keys and cousin on drums, touring across the Northern Rivers and regional NSW.
