Seasoned and retired farmers group to launch in Armidale

A NSW Farmers Retire Farmers meetings is an opportunity to connect and talk to other retired farmers (NSW Farmers)

Farmers across the New England region are invited to attend the first meeting of the Armidale Seasoned and Retired Farmers Group, which will begin in April.

The group joins other groups already established by NSW Farmers around the region, including groups in Inverell and Tamworth.

“The Retired Farmers Group is an opportunity for farmers to make friends and meet people with similar interests, while also getting out and about,” said Mick Collins, Regional Services Manager and the organiser of the Retired Farmers Groups.

“They may not be as physically fit as they used to be, but mentally they’re as sharp as ever.”

“Staying in town can become quite frustrating, so here they can talk about what they’ve achieved and contributed to agriculture over their lives, and still feel connected to the industry.”

For Mick, organising the meetings has been personally rewarding as well.

“It’s very rewarding to walk into this room of friends and know that it’s a highlight for them as well. We have a cup of tea and a great yarn, mostly just sharing what they’ve all seen and experienced.”

The Armidale Bowling Club will be the venue for the group’s monthly gatherings, with the first catch-up scheduled for Tuesday, 21 April at 10.30am. The date has been adjusted from the original proposal to accommodate branch AGMs taking place across the region.

“Even if you are still on the farm you are more than welcome,” said

“These groups are very casual and open to retired and semi-retired farmers or anyone who has had experience in the Agricultural Industry.

“Apart from farming it could be, but not exclusive to, truck driving, agronomy, stock and station agents etc.

Each monthly meeting will feature a guest speaker presenting on topics of interest to those involved in agriculture, alongside plenty of opportunity for conversation and connection.

Attendees are welcome to arrive from 10am to enjoy a coffee and a chat before the formal gathering begins at 10.30am.

Farmers are encouraged to spread the word to friends, neighbours and colleagues who may be interested.
