Swan Cup set to bring fierce competition to Inverell next weekend

One of the highlights of the national polocrosse calendar is set to return to Inverell next weekend, with the Swan Cup and Inverell Polocrosse Club Carnival promising fierce competition both on the field and in the sale ring.

Competitors, breeders and horse buyers from across Australia are expected to converge on the Inverell Polocrosse Grounds at Rob Roy from Friday 27 March to Sunday 29 March for the annual event, which combines high-level polocrosse with a major Australian Stock Horse sale.

Run by the Inverell Polocrosse Club, the Swan Cup has grown into one of the country’s most anticipated polocrosse events, drawing strong fields of competitors alongside breeders eager to showcase their horses.

Club nominations open today, Monday 16 March, and will close on Friday, 20 March, with strong early interest from teams across the country. Sale and team nominations have already closed.

Competition will run across multiple grades, including Open A, B, C and D divisions, as well as junior and sub-junior competitions, with prizes awarded to winners, runners-up and best numbered horses in each grade.

Alongside the action on the field, the Swan Cup is also known for its horse sale, which has become a major drawcard for breeders and buyers alike.

More than 50 horses have already been nominated for the sale, marking the highest number of sale horse nominations the club has received for the event.

The sale gives buyers the chance to see horses perform in competition before bidding, adding an extra layer of excitement to the weekend.

Festivities will begin on Thursday 26 March when gates open at midday ahead of competition kicking off at 8am on Friday morning.

But the Swan Cup is about more than just competition. The weekend has long been known as one of the region’s biggest social gatherings for the polocrosse community.

A bar and canteen will run throughout the weekend, with a Friday night barbecue, Saturday night dinner and DJs on both nights creating a festival atmosphere around the grounds.

Inverell Shire Council has also thrown its support behind the event, recognising its value for the local economy and community.

Council has committed to assisting with infrastructure support, including the provision of a water truck and driver during the event and grading of Eddie Park Lane and the entrance to the grounds if required.

Mayor Kate Dight said the Swan Cup continued to deliver strong benefits for the Inverell region.

“The Swan Cup continues to be a significant sporting and economic event for the Inverell region, attracting competitors, families and buyers who contribute to local accommodation, hospitality and retail sectors,” she said.

“Council’s support helps ensure the event remains a highlight on the national polocrosse calendar and continues to bring strong economic and community benefits to the Inverell district.”

Spectators are welcome across the weekend, with weekend entry priced at $35 for adults and free for children under 16.

Those wanting to compete or attend are encouraged to keep an eye on the Swan Cup Facebook page.
