Tenterfield Australia Day honours announced

Tenterfield Shire Council held its official Australia Day ceremony on Monday, 26 January 2026, at the Tenterfield Showground, celebrating the contributions of local residents, welcoming new citizens, and reflecting on the community’s unique identity.

The event commenced with an Acknowledgement of Country delivered by Roxanne Bancroft-Stuart. This was followed by the raising of the Australian National Flag by local school leaders and a rendition of the national anthem led by Drew Bates.

Tenterfield Shire Mayor Bronwyn Petrie presented the 2026 Local Citizen Awards, acknowledging individuals and groups whose efforts have positively impacted the community.

A total of 11 nominations were received across five award categories, reflecting the Shire’s strong culture of volunteerism and civic engagement.

The recipients of the 2026 Australia Day Local Citizen Awards for Tenterfield Shire are:

  • Lisa Dalton – Local Citizen of the Year
  • Brooke Everett – Local Young Citizen of the Year
  • Ava Mitchell – Local Sportsperson of the Year
  • Liston Hall Centenary Celebration – Local Community Event of the Year
  • Barney Downs Rural Fire Brigade, RFS – Local Emergency Services Volunteer Group of the Year

In a separate event held in Urbenville, Cr Greg Purcell presented the Urbenville Local Citizen of the Year award to local resident Austan Winter.

As part of the day’s program, the Council also hosted its first citizenship ceremony for the year. Eight individuals were formally welcomed as Australian citizens, each making their pledge in front of the gathered community.

Council congratulated all award recipients and new citizens, and acknowledged funding support from the National Australia Day Council through the 2026 Community Events Grant, which contributed to the delivery of the celebration.
